The yellow started at the bottom.
You noticed it on a Tuesday, one leaf, the lowest one, gone soft and pale at the tip. And you thought, that is just the old one going. That happens.
Then the next one up went. Then the one after that.
And somewhere in the second week it stopped being a plant losing leaves and became a line moving up a page, and you started counting. From the bottom. Every morning, before the kettle, in that particular silence a person keeps for a thing they have not told anybody about.
Three weeks now. And you know exactly which leaf is next.
Here is what I want to say before anything else, because if I say the practical thing first it will land on a man who is already keeping score, and it will just become one more measurement.
You are not the defendant here.

He knoweth our frame
There is a line in the Psalms about how God looks at a thing that is wearing out, and it is not what most people expect.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. (Psalm 103:13-14, King James Version)
He knoweth our frame. He remembereth that we are dust.
Sit with what that sentence is actually doing. It is not saying God overlooks our frailty, the way a kind person pretends not to notice a limp. It says He knows the specification. He knows what the thing is made of, He knows what it can take, and He remembers it without being reminded.
Now hold that beside three weeks of mornings at the windowsill.
You have been building a case. Not consciously, and not out of cruelty. But counting is what a person does when they are trying to establish something, and the thing you are trying to establish is what this decline proves. Each morning adds a data point. Each data point tightens the conclusion.
You are held by somebody who already knows what you are made of, and a leaf count has never once been the evidence in that room. Psalm 103 says He knoweth our frame and remembereth that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a man standing at a sill before the kettle has boiled.
And notice what the Psalm does not say. It does not say God assesses our frame. It does not say He audits it, grades it, or waits to see whether it holds up under load.
He knows it. Past tense, settled, nothing pending.
That is a different relationship to a fragile thing than the one you have with that pot right now. You are watching yours to find out what it means. He is not watching you to find out anything.
You were known before the first leaf turned, and there is no finding out left to do about you. The Holy Spirit is the one who carries that, and it is the written word of Psalm 103 and not my opinion that says He remembereth we are dust.
What the bottom leaves actually are
Now the practical half, and it is going to be shorter than you want, and that is on purpose.
A plant sheds from the bottom. That is what plants do.
The lowest leaves are the oldest leaves. They were made first, they have done the most work, and they are the furthest from the light. When a plant has less to spend than it needs, it spends it upward and it lets the bottom go. This is not the plant failing. It is the plant deciding, and deciding in the direction of its own future.
So the pattern you have been tracking, bottom first, moving up, is the single most ordinary thing a plant in a pot can do. It is what happens after a move. After a season change. After a week of less light. After nothing at all that anyone can name.
You have been reading an ordinary process as a message, and the plant has never once been sending you one. What Psalm 103 says about a God who knows our frame is the ground under that sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes an interpretation off a man who has been carrying it for three weeks.
Now, does that mean everything is fine and it stops?
I do not know. It might keep going. Some of them do.
And I am not going to tell you it recovers, because I would be making that up, and because that would hand a man one more thing to check against every morning. There are enough of those already.
What I can tell you is what the counting is costing. Three weeks of it means roughly twenty mornings that started with an assessment. That is not nothing. A day that opens with a verdict runs differently from a day that opens without one, and you have been paying that price quietly since the first Tuesday.
You are allowed to start a morning without an inspection, and no leaf on that plant has ever once had the authority to open your day. The Holy Spirit is the one who hands a morning back, and the word stands in Psalm 103 whether or not the lowest leaf holds.
The counting is the thing to put down
Here is the part I would want said to me. The counting is not care. It feels like care, because it is attention and attention is what love does. But look at what it actually produces. It produces a number, the number produces a trend, and the trend produces a conclusion about a man.
Care would be: water when dry, give it the best light available, leave it be. Counting is: measure, compare, extrapolate, worry, repeat. They are not the same act and they do not cost the same.
One of those takes about ninety seconds a week. The other one takes a piece of every single morning, and the plant does not benefit from it by even one leaf.
You are free to give that plant real care and put the measuring down, and ninety seconds a week has never once been the lesser kind of love. The Spirit of God is the one who says that over a man at a sill, and the word of Psalm 103 stands underneath it: He knoweth our frame.
And here is the thing underneath, and I think you already know it. The counting is not really about the plant. A man who counts leaves is usually a man who has learned that things go wrong quietly, and that the only defense is to notice early. That is not a character flaw. That is a lesson somebody taught you, probably at cost.
But it does not work on a windowsill. You cannot catch this early. There is nothing to catch.
You have already been given permission to stop watching for the next one, and vigilance has never once been the price of keeping something. Psalm 103 puts the knowing on God's side of the table, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stands beside a man while he stops counting.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man at a windowsill this morning, before the kettle.
You are not on trial in that pot, and a yellow leaf has never once been a verdict read out over you. I am not handing you a diagnosis and I am not promising you the next one holds. Psalm 103:13-14 says that as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him, for he knoweth our frame, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts a sentence off a windowsill.
And this one, which is the word I came with:
You have been counting because somebody taught you that noticing early is the only protection there is, and you are held by One who knows your frame without being told. The written word says He remembereth that we are dust, and the Spirit of God is the one who says it over you now.
The bottom leaves are the oldest leaves. That is all the pattern has ever meant.
Declare this over yourself
- Count that runs before I am properly awake, you are not vigilance and you are not care. Psalm 103:14 says he knoweth our frame, he remembereth that we are dust, so by the Holy Spirit I put the ledger down and I water only when the soil is dry, in the name of Jesus.
- Dread at the bottom of that pot, a yellow leaf has never once been a verdict on me. The written word says the LORD pitieth them that fear him, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading an ordinary shedding as a sentence on my life.
- Father, You know my frame and You remember what I am made of without being reminded of it once. Your word says he knoweth our frame, so by Your Spirit I stop building a case at the windowsill, and I let the oldest leaves be the oldest leaves.
