From about October it goes.
Not all at once. It goes off the back wall first, then it stops reaching the middle of the room, then some afternoon in November you realize you have had the lamp on since two.
And it stays like that until roughly February, and then one week it is back, and you can never say afterward which week it was.
Four months. A third of every year.
And you have taken that personally, in a way that is hard to say out loud. Not as weather. As a fact about your particular flat and therefore about your particular life, which cannot hold the things other people's lives hold.
So nothing goes on that sill, because of four months out of twelve.

Seedtime and harvest shall not cease
There is a promise at the end of the flood account, and the shape of it is what matters here.
While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22, King James Version)
Seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter.
You are living inside a cycle God named in pairs, and no half of any of those pairs has ever once been the part that counts against you. Genesis 8:22 puts cold beside heat and winter beside summer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a woman putting the lamp on at two in the afternoon.
Look at how the promise is built. It does not promise good conditions. It promises the continuation of the alternation.
Cold and heat. Winter and summer. Both named, both guaranteed, neither treated as the failure of the other. What God undertakes to keep going is the pattern, and half of that pattern is the cold and the dark.
So the four months are not an interruption of the arrangement. They are half of the arrangement, and they were promised in the same breath as the light.
You were never in a broken version of the year, and the dark half of a cycle has never once been evidence that something has gone wrong. The Spirit of God is what makes that steadying rather than resigned, and Genesis 8 is where the pairs are written down.
What a plant does in the dark months
Now the practical half, and it is one adjustment.
A plant in low light in winter does not need what it needs in June. It is not growing. It is holding, and a holding plant uses a fraction of the water it uses when it is putting out leaves.
Which means the single most common way a plant dies over winter is not the darkness. It is being watered as though it were summer.
The soil stays wet because the plant is not drinking it and the air is not drying it, and a pot that stays wet for weeks in the cold is the actual danger, and it is entirely within your control.
You have the one variable that matters already in your hands, and the darkness of those months has never once been the thing that finishes a plant. What is written in Genesis 8:22 keeps the winter in the covenant, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a dreaded season into an adjustment.
So the rule for those four months is: water half as much, and let it do nothing.
That second half is the harder one. A plant that sits there all winter doing absolutely nothing looks like a failure to somebody watching it. It is not. That is what a plant in low light is supposed to do, and doing nothing is how it comes through.
You are permitted to let something sit still for a third of a year, and four months of no visible progress has never once meant nothing was happening. The Spirit of God is the one who makes stillness legible, and Genesis 8 is the ground under it.
Notice the week it comes back
And here is the part that will change the four months more than anything practical.
Write down the week the light comes back.
You said you can never say afterward which week it was. That is the thing worth fixing, because a season you cannot mark is a season that feels like it might not end.
So this year, on the first afternoon the lamp stays off at two, write the date somewhere. One line. That is it.
Then next October, when it starts to go again, you have a date. Not a feeling, not a hope. A date, from your own window, in your own handwriting, that says the light came back on approximately this week last year.
You are able to give yourself a marked ending for a season you have only ever felt, and one date on a page has never once been a small thing in November. Genesis 8:22 promises the alternation itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman hold a written date through a dark month.
So here is what is going out over a woman putting the lamp on at two in the afternoon.
You are living through a season and not a sentence, and four dark months have never once been a statement about what you can keep. I am not going to tell you those months are pleasant, and I am not going to promise you anything about what stands on that sill. Genesis 8:22 says while the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts the winter inside the promise rather than outside it.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been reading a third of the year as a fact about your life, and the cold half of any pair has never once been the half that means something. The Holy Spirit is the one who puts that sentence into a room, and Genesis 8 is where the pairs stand written.
Half the water. Let it do nothing. Write the week down.
Declare this over yourself
- Four months I read as a sentence, you are not a fact about my life. Genesis 8:22 says seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter shall not cease, so by the Holy Spirit I water half as much and I write down the week it comes back, in the name of Jesus.
- Lamp that goes on at two in November, you have never once been proof of anything about me. The written word puts the cold and the dark inside the promise rather than outside it, and by the Holy Spirit I stop taking a third of the year personally.
- Father, You promised the alternation and not the good conditions, and You named both halves in the same breath. Your word says cold and heat, and summer and winter, so by Your Spirit I let it do nothing through the dark, and I mark the week the light returns.
