Everybody Told Me Something Different

You asked three people.

Your sister said it wants more water. The woman at work said that is exactly the problem, it wants less. And somebody who genuinely knows about these things looked at a photograph and said it is the light, nothing to do with water at all.

All three said it with complete confidence. None of them hesitated.

And you have done nothing since, because the only thing you learned is that you cannot tell who is right, and doing the wrong one might be what finishes it.

So it has now been eleven days of no water, no move, no anything, because three confident answers produced a paralysis that no answer at all would have produced.

Let me say the thing that goes underneath everything else here.

The waiting is worse than picking wrong.

In the multitude of counsel

Proverbs says something people quote to mean the opposite of what it says.

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. (Proverbs 11:14, King James Version)

In the multitude of counselors there is safety.

You are standing in exactly the safety that verse describes, and three answers that disagree have never once been the failure of the counsel. Proverbs 11:14 promises safety in the multitude rather than agreement in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a woman on day eleven.

Read what it actually promises. Safety. Not certainty. Not consensus. Not a single correct answer emerging from the group like a verdict.

The multitude is safe precisely because it is a multitude. Three views means the thing has been looked at three ways, and you now know the whole range of what it might be, which is a great deal more than you knew on day one.

That feels like nothing because you were hoping for an answer. It is not nothing. It is a map of the possibilities, and it came from people who cared enough to look.

You were given something real by all three of them, and the disagreement has never once canceled what any one of them saw. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a range be useful instead of maddening, and Proverbs 11 is where the safety is written down.

Why three confident answers paralyze

Now the practical half, and it starts with why this locked you up.

One answer, you act on it. No answer, you guess. Three answers, and a new and impossible job appears, which is to determine who is right before doing anything.

That job cannot be done. Nobody out-diagnoses three people from a kitchen table. And so long as the job feels required, nothing happens.

Here is what dissolves it. In this particular case, the cost of being wrong is very low and the cost of waiting is not.

You are facing a decision where being wrong costs almost nothing, and the weight you have given it has never once matched its actual size. The Spirit of God is the one who measures a risk honestly, and it stands in Proverbs 11:14 that safety is in the counsel already.

Think about it plainly. If you water it and water was not the problem, it has had a drink. If you move it to better light and light was not the problem, it is in better light. If you leave it drier and dryness was not the issue, it is a bit drier for a week.

None of those finish a plant. They are all within the range of ordinary treatment.

You have been guarding against a risk that is much smaller than it feels, and one reasonable action has never once been the thing that finished anything. What is written in Proverbs 11:14 puts safety in the counsel itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the size of the risk back down to its true size.

Whereas eleven days of nothing, on a plant that was already struggling, is itself a treatment. It is the dryness option, chosen by default, without anybody deciding it.

That is what waiting actually is here. It is not neutral. It is the third answer, applied by accident.

You are already doing one of the three without having chosen it, and there has never once been a neutral position available to you in this. The Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain without making it a scolding, and Proverbs 11 is the written ground.

Pick one and write it down

So the instruction is almost insultingly simple, and the second half of it is the part that matters.

Pick one of the three. Any one. The one you liked best when you heard it, or the one from the person you trust most, or the first one. There is no wrong way to pick.

Do it today.

And then write down which one you picked, somewhere you will find it in a month.

You are holding one windowsill and one month, and a note in a drawer has never once been a promise you are bound to keep. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small trial feel small, and Proverbs 11:14 is the written ground: in the multitude of counsel there is safety.

That second half is what turns a guess into something you can learn from. Right now, if you do a thing and the plant changes, you will not remember clearly what you did or when. Writing it down means that in a month you have one real piece of information about your own windowsill, which is worth more than three opinions from people who have never stood in your kitchen.

You are allowed to run one experiment instead of solving a puzzle, and a written note has never once been the same as a commitment you cannot undo. Proverbs 11:14 makes the counsel safe rather than final, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a woman permission to simply try something.
