I Talk To It And I Feel Foolish

You said something to it this morning.

Nothing much. Something about the light, or a here you go as the water went in. The kind of thing that comes out of a person without being decided on.

And then you heard yourself, in a flat with nobody else in it, talking to a pot.

And a second thing followed immediately, which was a conclusion about your life.

That is what this is about. Not the talking. The conclusion.

Because you have quietly filed that habit as evidence, and the case it is evidence in is one you have been building against yourself for a while.

And it is a very quiet case. Nobody else has ever been shown the file. There is no prosecutor and no date set, and the evidence goes in on ordinary mornings without anybody announcing it, which is exactly why it has been running for as long as it has without ever being examined. So let us examine it.

Pour out your heart before him

David writes a line that is an instruction to a whole group of people, and the verb in it is not a quiet one.

Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:8, King James Version)

Pour out your heart before him.

You are instructed to use your voice rather than to contain yourself, and speaking out loud with nobody visible has never once been the behavior of somebody coming apart. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a woman who heard herself talking in an empty flat.

Look at the verb. Pour out. Not offer up, not present, not bring in an orderly fashion.

Pour out is what you do with a container that has too much in it, and it is messy by construction, and it assumes the thing coming out is not organized.

And it is given to ye people, which is everybody, not to the eloquent or the composed or those with something worth saying.

You were told to empty yourself out loud, and an unorganized thing said in a room has never once been outside what that instruction covers. The Spirit of God is what makes that permission real rather than theoretical, and Psalm 62 is where the pouring out is written down.

Talking is not the symptom

Now the practical half, and it is about what you concluded.

Almost everybody talks to things. To cars, to machines that are not working, to bread that will not come out of the tin. It is one of the most ordinary human behaviors there is and it has nothing to do with loneliness.

What made it feel like evidence was the empty flat, not the talking.

And the empty flat is a fact about your circumstances, which is a different thing entirely from a fact about you, and those two got welded together in about a second and a half this morning.

You are more than the room you were standing in, and an address has never once been a description of the person at it. Psalm 62:8 tells everybody to pour out loud without asking who else is there, and the Spirit of God is the one who breaks that weld.

You have welded a circumstance to a character, and an empty room has never once been a report on the woman standing in it. What is written in Psalm 62:8 tells everybody to pour out loud, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a weld that was made in a second and a half.

And here is the thing about that particular conclusion, which is why it needs answering rather than ignoring.

It is not a thought that passes. It is a filing. Once a habit has been entered as evidence of loneliness, every occurrence of it afterward gets counted again, and a small ordinary thing becomes a daily reminder of something nobody was thinking about until it arrived.

That is what has actually been happening in your kitchen, and it is worth stopping.

You have been re-reading the same evidence every morning, and one ordinary habit has never once been able to prove what it has been filed as proving. The Spirit of God is the one who closes that file, and Psalm 62 is the ground under it.

Say it on purpose

So here is the instruction and it is the same move that works on most of these.

Say something out loud to it today on purpose. And do not apologize for it afterward.

On purpose is the whole of it. The problem has never been the talking. The problem is being caught at it, and being caught requires that it was unplanned.

A thing decided in advance cannot catch anybody out. There is nobody there to be caught by, and the ruling was made before it happened.

You are able to rule on this before you open your mouth, and a decision made in advance has never once left room for anybody to catch you at anything. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stands with a woman who has decided to speak.

And afterward, say nothing about it. No internal comment. No noticing that you did it again. No filing.

You are able to do it deliberately and remove the entire mechanism, and a sentence said on purpose in an empty room has never once been able to be used against you. Psalm 62:8 says pour out your heart before him, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman deciding to speak before she speaks.
