She stopped in front of it on the way through.
Why does that one look sad.
And you said something. You cannot fully remember what. Something with the word just in it, and something about how it will probably be fine, and then you moved her along toward her shoes.
And you have thought about it three times since, because she asked a real question and she got a managed answer, and she is old enough to know the difference between those.
Here is what was actually happening in that half second, and it was not about the plant.
You did not want your worry to get into her. So you gave her a sentence with nothing in it, and children can feel the shape of a sentence with nothing in it.

He shall gently lead those
Isaiah has a picture of how God moves a group along when some of them are small and slow.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11, King James Version)
He shall gently lead those that are with young.
You are being led at the pace of the one who is carrying somebody, and the gentleness in that verse has never once been offered to you on the condition that you have the answers. Isaiah 40:11 says he shall gently lead those that are with young, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a mother in a hallway with shoes in her hand.
Look at what the shepherd does with the small ones. He gathers them with his arm and carries them. He does not explain the terrain to them. He does not brief them on the route.
And then the phrase for the mothers, which is the one I want you to have. He gently leads the ones who are carrying.
Not drives. Not hurries. Leads, gently, at the pace set by the one with the load.
You were never asked to move faster than the one you are carrying, and no half second in a hallway has ever once been long enough to be judged on. The Spirit of God is the one who sets that pace, and Isaiah 40 is where the gentleness is written down.
What children actually need said
Now the practical half, and it is much simpler than the half second made it feel.
Children do not need reassurance. They need accuracy, at a size they can hold.
You are raising somebody who can be told a true thing, and a child has never once been made safer by a sentence with nothing in it. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a mother enough to be plain, and Isaiah 40:11 has the shepherd carrying rather than explaining.
Reassurance is what an adult reaches for when the adult is uncomfortable. And a child reads it instantly, not by analyzing the words but by noticing the mismatch between the words and the face, and the mismatch is the part that frightens them.
What settles a child is a true sentence, short, said calmly, by a person who is not obviously managing them.
Which in this case is about seven words. It is not doing well and we do not know why.
That is the whole answer. It is honest, it is not frightening, it does not forecast, and it treats her as somebody who can be told things.
You have something true and small enough to hand her, and a short answer has never once been the same as shutting a child out. What is written in Isaiah 40:11 has the shepherd leading at the pace of the one carrying, and the Holy Spirit is the one who slows a mother's half second down.
And notice what that sentence does that the managed one could not. It includes her in the not knowing.
The managed answer puts you on one side, holding information, and her on the other side, being handled. The true one puts you both on the same side of a thing neither of you can explain, and that is a much better place for a child to stand with her mother.
You are able to stand beside her in the not knowing rather than above it, and admitting you do not know has never once cost you her confidence. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that safe rather than alarming, and Isaiah 40 is the ground under it.
Let her do something
There is one more piece, and it is the part that will do the most work.
Give her the watering.
Not as a lesson. Not as a way of teaching her about loss. Just: here, you do this one, this one is yours to look after.
Children metabolize a hard thing through their hands far better than through a conversation. A child who has a job in a situation is a child who is not simply watching an adult be worried.
You are able to give her something to do instead of something to worry about, and a small job has never once been too heavy for a child to carry. Isaiah 40:11 gathers the lambs rather than briefing them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a shared task light.
And be honest with yourself about the other half of why this helps. It takes the watering out of your hands, on a plant where your hands have not been much use lately, and that is not a small relief either.
If it goes anyway, she will have watered it, and that will be a better memory than having watched you go quiet about it in a hallway.
You are allowed to hand her the job and stop carrying this one alone, and sharing a small task has never once been a burden laid on a child. Isaiah 40:11 gathers the lambs with his arm rather than explaining the road to them, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a shared job lighter than a shared worry.
So here is what is going out over a mother who gave a managed answer in a hallway.
You are allowed to tell her the plain truth and stop there, and a short honest answer has never once been a failure to explain. I am not going to promise you the plant recovers, and I am not going to tell you what to say if it does not. Isaiah 40:11 says he shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and shall gently lead those that are with young, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who slows a half second down to a size a mother can work in.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were trying to keep your worry off her, and that instinct has never once been the wrong instinct even when the sentence came out hollow. The Spirit of God is the one who says that over you now, and Isaiah 40 is where the gentle leading stands written.
Seven honest words. Then hand her the watering can.
Declare this over yourself
- Half second in the hallway, I gave her nothing at all. you are not protection and you never were. Isaiah 40:11 says he shall gently lead those that are with young, so by the Holy Spirit I go back today and I tell her the plain thing in one sentence, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that my worry would cross into her, you have never once been the reason a child gets frightened. The written word has the shepherd carrying the lambs without briefing them on the road, and by the Holy Spirit I stop managing her and I stand beside her instead.
- Father, You lead the ones who are carrying somebody at the pace of the one being carried. Your word says he shall gather the lambs with his arm, so by Your Spirit I answer her honestly, and I hand her the watering can.
