I Did Four Things To It In One Week

Monday you moved it to the other windowsill.

Wednesday you turned it, because the side facing in looked thin. Thursday you watered it, which was probably fine. Friday you moved it back, because the new sill seemed to be doing nothing for it.

Four things. Seven days. One plant.

And if somebody had asked you on Saturday how it was going, you would have said you had been keeping a close eye on it, and you would have meant that as a good thing.

So the first thing to say is about the sequence rather than about any one of those actions.

Every single one of those was reasonable, and together they are the problem.

That is an unusual shape for a problem to have, and it is worth saying plainly, because there is nothing here to correct at the level of any individual action. Nobody did anything careless. Nobody did anything anybody could point at. The trouble is entirely in the sequence, and a sequence is a much harder thing to notice than a mistake.

He that believeth shall not make haste

Isaiah has a line about a foundation stone, and the last clause of it is the one nobody quotes.

Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. (Isaiah 28:16, King James Version)

He that believeth shall not make haste.

You are being shown what belief actually looks like from outside, and the absence of hurry has never once been the same as an absence of care. Isaiah 28:16 says he that believeth shall not make haste, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over somebody who did four things to one plant in a week.

Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say the believer will be calm, or patient, or feel settled about anything.

It says he will not make haste, which is a description of behavior rather than of feeling. It is about what a person does with their hands, and it is offered as the visible evidence that something underneath is secure.

And the reason given is the foundation. The stone is laid, it is tried, it is sure. The not hasting follows from the stone being there, not from the man being calm.

You were never asked to feel unhurried before your hands could be still, and stillness in the hands has never once had to wait for stillness in the chest. The Spirit of God is what makes that available, and Isaiah 28 is where the foundation and the haste are set together.

Why four changes is worse than one

Now the practical half, and it is one fact with a large consequence.

A plant takes two to four weeks to respond to a change. Not days. Weeks.

So on Wednesday, when you turned it, the plant had not begun to respond to Monday's move. On Friday, when you moved it back, it had not begun to respond to anything at all.

Which means none of those four actions produced information. Every one of them was taken on the basis of a plant that was still reacting to the previous one, and the whole week produced nothing you can use.

You have a week of careful attention that yielded no usable information, and none of that has ever once been because you were not paying enough attention. What is written in Isaiah 28:16 sets the not hasting on a foundation rather than on a temperament, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a week of effort into something other than a failure.

And worse, the changes compound. Each move restarts the adjustment period, so a plant moved twice in a week has spent the week in permanent transition and has not been anywhere long enough to settle.

You have been given a fact nobody told you, and not knowing that about a plant has never once been a failure of anybody's attention. Isaiah 28:16 rests the not hasting on a foundation already laid, and the Holy Spirit is the one who hands over a missing piece without a rebuke attached.

You are able to give it one change and then a stretch of nothing, and doing less has never once been the lazier option here. The Spirit of God is the one who makes doing less feel like a decision, and Isaiah 28 is the ground under it.

One change, then seven days

So here is the instruction and it has a hard edge on it.

Choose the one change that matters most. Make it today. Then do nothing else to that plant for seven days.

Not the four things ranked and done in order. One. The others do not get done later in the week, they get abandoned, and that is the point.

And nothing else means nothing else. Do not turn it. Do not move it. Do not water it unless the soil is genuinely dry on the seventh day. Do not put a finger in the soil to check on day three.

You have one week of leaving something alone in front of you, and seven days of nothing has never once been a week in which you did nothing. Isaiah 28:16 says he that believeth shall not make haste, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a pair of hands still for seven days.

Write down which day the week ends, because on day four it will look worse, and day four is exactly when a plant that is settling into a new position looks its worst, and you will have an excellent reason.

You are able to abandon three good ideas in order to learn from one, and letting three reasonable changes go has never once been carelessness. Isaiah 28:16 says he that believeth shall not make haste, and the Holy Spirit is the one with somebody on day four with a written date in their hand.
