It does not know you are there.
Not in any sense. There is nobody in that pot. It does not experience the water arriving as a kindness, it does not have a category for you, and if somebody else watered it on Thursday it would be exactly as it is now.
You have thought about this. That is why you are here.
Because the watering has started to feel strange, in a way you cannot quite name, and the strangeness is this: you are doing something for a thing that cannot register that you did it.
And the question underneath is not really about the plant.
Does an act of care count if nothing on the other end knows it happened.
To dress it and to keep it
There is a line at the very beginning of Genesis about what a man was put in a garden to do.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15, King James Version)
To dress it and to keep it.
You are doing the oldest work there is, and tending something has never once needed an answer from the thing tended to be the work it was given as. Genesis 2:15 says to dress it and to keep it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over somebody standing at a sill with a cup of water.
Look at when this happens in the account. Before anything has gone wrong. Before there is any need, any repair, any lack.
Tending is not introduced as a response to a problem. It is there in the original arrangement, as the thing a person is for, in a place where nothing at all was going badly.
And the garden does not thank him. That is not a defect in the story that somebody forgot to fix. It is simply not part of what tending is.
You were made for work that does not answer back, and the silence of a thing you keep has never once been a sign that the keeping was pointless. The Spirit of God is what makes that a settled thing rather than a consolation, and Genesis 2 is where the dressing and the keeping are written down.
What tending does to the one tending
Now the practical half, and it is the honest answer to the question at the top.
The plant gets water. That is real, and it is the smaller half.
The larger half is what happens in a person who keeps something. A man who tends a thing for two years is not the same man he was at the start, and the difference did not come from the plant, which contributed nothing but a reason.
Regular unnoticed care builds something in the one doing it. It is one of the very few things that reliably does.
You have been changed by two years of this, and no thing in a pot has ever once needed to notice in order for that to have happened. What is written in Genesis 2:15 puts the tending at the start rather than as a remedy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over an ordinary Thursday.
And here is the part that is worth sitting with, because it reaches past the windowsill.
You have the largest and best parts of your life built exactly like this, and no unacknowledged thing you have carried has ever once shown up on anybody's list. Genesis 2:15 sets the keeping at the beginning, and the Spirit of God is the one who counts the unseen half.
There are people carried who never knew the extent of it. There are things held together that nobody thanked anybody for, because nobody ever saw them.
A plant is the smallest possible version of that, and it is also the clearest, because with a plant there is no ambiguity at all about whether anybody noticed.
You are already practiced at care that nobody sees, and a plant has never once been anything but the smallest and clearest version of it. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that plain, and Genesis 2 is the ground under the keeping.
Do it on purpose once
So here is the instruction and it is very small and it is the whole of this article.
Water it once this week deliberately. And notice that you chose to.
Right now the watering happens on autopilot, in a slot, as maintenance. That is fine and it is how most good things get done and nothing is wrong with it.
But once this week, before you pour, stop for one second and register what is happening. Nobody is asking for this. Nothing will acknowledge it. And it is being done anyway. That one second is the entire exercise. Not a longer watering, not a better one. The same act, with you present in it for one second.
You are able to be present in one ordinary act this week, and one second of noticing has never once been a sentimental addition to a plain job. Genesis 2:15 puts the keeping at the beginning of everything, and the Holy Spirit is the one with somebody standing at a sill for one deliberate second.
So here is what is going out over somebody standing at a sill with a cup of water.
You are able to tend something unnoticed, and care has never once required an answer to be real care. I am not going to tell you the plant knows, because it does not, and pretending otherwise would insult both of you. Genesis 2:15 says the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts unanswered keeping at the beginning of everything rather than at the margin of it.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been building something in yourself for two years without counting it, and the things you have carried unseen have never once been worth less than the ones anybody noticed. The Spirit of God is the one who holds that steady when you stop reading, and Genesis 2 is where the keeping stands written.
Once this week. On purpose. One second.
Declare this over yourself
- Question of whether this counts, you are not a small question and you never were. Genesis 2:15 says to dress it and to keep it, so by the Holy Spirit I water it once this week deliberately and I notice that I chose to, in the name of Jesus.
- Sense that unanswered care is wasted care, you have never once been true about anything I have carried. The written word puts the keeping at the beginning, before there was any need or any lack, and by the Holy Spirit I stop measuring care by what comes back.
- Father, You put a man in a garden to dress it and to keep it before one single thing had gone wrong. Your word says to dress it and to keep it, so by Your Spirit I do the oldest work there is, and I do it unnoticed.
