Watering Too MuchMatthew 6:34

I Water It Because I Cannot Fix Anything Else

This message is for the man pouring water into one pot because it is the only thing in his life he is able to do something about this week

It is the only thing that answers.

That is the honest shape of this week. There is the thing at work that will be decided by somebody else. There is the situation with your brother that has no move available. There is the letter you are waiting on.

And there is a pot on the sill, and when you pour water into it, water goes in.

That is the whole appeal. Something happened because you did it.

So you have been over there four times in two days, and the plant has had more water than it wants, and you know that.

Let me say the true thing before the practical thing.

You are not doing something stupid. You are doing the only available thing, and doing it too much.

I Water It Because I Cannot Fix Anything Else

Sufficient unto the day

Jesus ends a long passage about worry with a sentence that is much sharper than it sounds.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Matthew 6:34, King James Version)

Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

You are carrying more days than you were given, and no man has ever once been handed tomorrow's weight along with today's. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a man at a windowsill with a jug for the fourth time in two days.

Notice that He does not say the trouble is imaginary. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. There is evil in the day. It is real, it is present, and He names it.

What He objects to is the loading. A day comes with its own weight, and that weight is enough, and taking on the weight of the next one as well is what breaks people.

And look at what is actually in your week. The work decision, the situation with your brother, the letter. Not one of those is today's. Every one of them is a future weight being carried in advance because it cannot be acted on.

You have been carrying three things that have no move in them, and none of that weight has ever once been due today. The Spirit of God is what makes that a real unloading rather than a pleasant idea, and Matthew 6 is where the sufficiency is written down.

Why it goes into the pot

Now the practical half, and it is about where all that pressure ends up.

A man carrying unmovable weight will find something he can move. That is not a weakness, it is how people are built, and it is the same thing that has a person tidy a drawer after bad news.

The trouble is the scale. The weight is enormous and the available action is tiny, and so the tiny action gets repeated, because one pour does not discharge what is actually being carried.

You are doing exactly what a man under an unmovable weight does, and reaching for the one thing that answers has never once been a defect. Matthew 6:34 refuses the load of the next day, and the Spirit of God is the one who names a reflex without calling it a fault.

Four trips in two days is not a man who has forgotten he watered it. It is a man trying to make a small thing hold a large thing.

You are not confused about what you already did, and repeating a small act has never once been a sign that a man is losing track of himself. What is written in Matthew 6:34 refuses tomorrow's load rather than the day's work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names the size of what is actually being carried.

And here is the honest bit about the plant, which takes about a sentence.

It cannot hold it. Nothing on a windowsill can. The pouring does not discharge anything, which is why it has to be done again two hours later.

You are asking an ordinary act to do something it has never once been able to do, and the failure of that has never been a failure of yours. The Spirit of God is the one who says that without taking the relief away, and Matthew 6 is the ground under the day.

Find the one thing that moves

So here is the instruction and it has two parts, and the second part is the one that actually helps.

Water it once today. Once. Then put the jug down.

And then write down the one thing this week that you can actually move.

There is always one. It is usually small and usually not the thing that is loudest. Send one message. Make one call. Say one sentence to somebody. Cancel one thing. Write it on whatever is nearest. One line.

You have one live thing in a week that has looked closed all week, and the smallness of it has never once meant it was not the real one. Matthew 6:34 hands a man a single day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows him what is actually in it.

Because the reason that pot has had four visits is that it looked like the only actionable thing in your life, and it is not. It was just the most visible one.

You are able to find one real move in a week that looks closed, and one line written down has never once been a small thing in a week like this. Matthew 6:34 gives a man one day to carry, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows him the one thing in it that is actually his.

The breakthrough

So here is what is going out over a man with a jug in his hand for the fourth time in two days.

You are given one day at a time to carry, and the pot on that sill has never once been the thing that was failing you. I am not going to promise you the week resolves, and I am not going to tell you the other three things do not matter. Matthew 6:34 says take therefore no thought for the morrow, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes tomorrow's weight out of today's hands.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been asking a windowsill to hold three things that have no move in them, and that has never once been the behavior of a man losing his grip. The Spirit of God is the one saying that over you now, and Matthew 6 is where the sufficiency stands written.

Once today. Then find the one thing that moves.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Weight of three things I cannot move, you are not today's and you never were. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, so by the Holy Spirit I water it once today and I write down the one thing I can actually move, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fourth trip in two days, you have never once been a man losing track of himself. The written word refuses the load of the next day and never the day's own work, and by the Holy Spirit I stop asking a pot to hold what it cannot hold.
  3. Father, You did not say the trouble was imaginary. You said the day has enough of its own. Your word says take therefore no thought for the morrow, so by Your Spirit I put the jug down, and I do the one thing that is actually mine this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
