I Made A Schedule Before I Made Any Coffee

There is a page about it.

Not a long one. A short set of notes, with a rough rota, and a couple of lines about what to check and how often. You wrote it on a Sunday evening and you felt quite good afterward.

And there is still no plant.

That is the thing. The system exists in full and the subject of it does not, and it has been like that for a while now.

You are not doing anything wrong. This is how you approach most things, and it works. It is why the car gets serviced, and why nobody in your house has ever had to chase you about anything.

But I want to name what it is doing here, because here it is not helping.

The planning has become the thing you are doing instead of the thing.

My yoke is easy

Jesus says something about how the load He gives is shaped, and the adjectives are the point.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:29-30, King James Version)

My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

You are being handed something that was designed to be easy, and no yoke of His has ever once needed a system built around it before it could be carried. Matthew 11:30 says my yoke is easy, and my burden is light, and the Holy Spirit is the one who says that over a man with a notebook and no plant.

Take the word easy seriously, because most people skip past it. It is not saying the load is important, or worthwhile, or manageable with effort. It says easy.

A yoke was fitted to the animal wearing it. A well made one distributed the weight so the work could be done all day. The word is about fit, not about lightness of duty.

So the thing being offered here is not a heavier commitment than you expected. It is a lighter one, and the planning has quietly made it heavier before it started.

You have built a structure around something that was already shaped to be carried, and the weight you are feeling has never once come from the plant. The Spirit of God is what makes that plain without making it a criticism, and Matthew 11 is where the easy yoke is written down.

What the notebook is actually for

Now the practical half, and I want to be fair to the notebook.

Planning is not procrastination. Not usually, and not for you. It is how you reduce the chance of a thing going badly, and in most areas of your life that has been an excellent trade.

But planning has a hidden property, which is that it feels like progress and produces none. An hour with the notebook and an hour with a watering can feel similar from the inside and are not remotely the same.

You are a man whose carefulness has served him well for years, and one habit landing in the wrong place has never once made it a bad habit. Matthew 11:30 offers an easy yoke rather than a reproof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who corrects an aim without correcting a man.

And there is a second property, which is more specific to this. A system built before any experience is a system built out of other people's conditions.

You do not know your own windowsill yet. You do not know how fast it dries out, what the room does in the afternoon, or which week you will be away. None of that is in the notes, because none of it is knowable until there is a plant standing there producing it.

You are missing the only information that matters, and no amount of preparation has ever once been able to supply what a plant on a sill supplies in a fortnight. What is written in Matthew 11:30 offers an easy yoke rather than a designed one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sends a man to get the thing itself.

And here is the part underneath, which is the one worth saying plainly.

The system is also insurance. If there is a documented process and the plant still goes, then the failure belongs to circumstances rather than to you. That is not cowardice. That is a sensible man protecting himself the way he knows how.

You are allowed to attempt this without a paper trail behind you, and going in unprepared has never once meant going in carelessly. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the insurance off gently, and Matthew 11 is the ground under the light burden.

Close it and go

So the instruction has two parts and the first one is the difficult one.

Close the notebook. Do not finish the page, do not tidy it, do not transfer it somewhere. Close it.

Then get one plant today and water it, and write nothing down about it.

Nothing. Not the date. Not the spot you put it. Not a note about how it looked. Anything worth knowing in three weeks will be known by having stood in front of it, which is a better kind of knowing than a log anyway.

You have a way of knowing things that does not run through a page, and standing in front of something has never once been the inferior record. Matthew 11:30 says my burden is light, and the Spirit of God is the one who teaches a man by the thing itself.

And in about a month, if you want to write something, write what actually happened rather than what should happen. That is a completely different document and it will be worth having.
